Homesick cos it's nearly footy season

I have to admit it. I am a tad homesick. I didn't believe it at first, and it is manifest in only a very limited way, but it has happened nonetheless.

This will be the first footy season in twenty-odd years where I am not glued to the radio all weekend or barracking passionately for the boys, either in front of the telly or in the outer. I had given this some thought and decided I would be able to do without this year. But I was wrong.

Last week I sent some frantic pre-season emails to Inside Footy and lined up a subscription. What a relief! I reckon I'll get the paper a week late, but I'd rather be a week behind and know everything than have to rely on the dodgy internet connection here.

So the homesickness is partly assuaged. I've also decided that I need a footy - I meant to buy one before I left Sydney but I ran out of luggage space. So I am hatching a scheme and hope to have one soon. There's a parade ground in town and a soccer field near one of the schools, and I reckon I can drag a few local blokes along to have a kick in the cool of the afternoon.

There's an Acehnese fella who works with Ms Vasco's mob. We've been fishing together a few times and he comes over for dinner and darts occasionally. Whenever he sees me he loves to say, "G'day, mate!" and give me a big grin.

He's good with the darts, so I'm pretty sure he knows how to sink the slipper into a Sherrin. He just doesn't know it yet.

Don't be homesick. Your footy team sucks anyway.

Hey Fi!

Aye, Mr Osborne does a bit of stuff like that. I think I read once that he does group history tours of the river, too, over a couple of weeks. Legend.

Re footy team, I should have mentioned here that I have left the Swans behind. I am barracking for the Tiges this year, in keeping with an old family tradition. It's not like I'm going to get to many games, though.

Bah, you can't just abandon a team. Silly boy!

Suppose you heard about Ben Cousins then? Naughty boy has to go to rehab - some are saying for ice abuse? Onya Wedgies.

Abandon? No, not really. I was there when they needed support - when they lost twenty-odd games in a row. They don't need me anymore. And I have left Sydney - I only starting barracking for them when I moved to Sydney.

Besides, there's Tiger blood in me. And I have some Tiges shorts that I wear when gardening! What more do you want?

Of course, I really should be barracking for the Jakarta Bintangs.

Tsk. Should never have abandoned the Tigers in the first place. Shame on you!

You've lived in Sydney longer than anywhere else. You can't abandon the Swannies. You're still pissed off about last years Grand Final aren't you, that's what it is.
My advice, abandon the Tiges NOW and avoid the turmoils that come with being a Richmond supporter. Look at Al, he woke up to the fact that Richmond are jokes and hasn't looked back. They are all membershiped up for this season with the Swannies. Even Pube and Kel are in, although only for the Telstra games and you might find that as another reason to jump off the Swans wagon anyway.
Cmon mate, 25 years in Sydney this year. Don't jump off now.

PS
It was 26 in a row.

Schrodes,

remember mate, i was born and raised in Victoria (Bundoora, Craigieburn, Montmorency/Eltham) grew up with AFL, Dad's a Geelong fan, Mum's an Essendon tragic, myself a Hawks boy since I can remember. Moved to Washington, followed the Redskins (still do) then moved to Sydney when i was 7 and was introduced to Rugby League and jumped on the Dragons. My old man was then posted back to Victoria where i renewed my love affair with the Hawks (at this stage i was still only 11) Finally, posted back to Sydney - Camden actually - where i caught up with the Dragons and was introduced to a relatively new side for the area, the Swans. (still remember quite vividly the removalists from Melbourne whilst unpacking the truck in Ruse ridiculing the Swans) Accessibility demanded attention, thus the Swans and Dragons floated to the top. Like Doylie, I have found myself going back to my roots... Hawthorn and The Dragons. Kel is a Swans fan, thus i 'jump on the bandwagon' as you say, for her.
Anyway... C'mon the Bloods, Dragons, Hawks and Bingtangs

(by the way Doylie, that word verification gig you've got set up is difficult after litres of goon)

Oh dear. Who gave Schrodes a keyboard? The interwebs are no longer safe!

Nah, leaving the Bloods, at least while I am in Nias. They just don't do it for me, friend. Mind you, with Bazz and Spider I reckon they'll run amok this year.

Pube, you're right, mate. About my roots. I meant to write in this post that the move to the Tiges was for Pat and Vera, mum's family. That's what it's about.

Hey Fellas,

All my life I've been a dedicated Carlton supporter. When I lived in Melbourne I knew all the player names and quoted statistics with the best of them. The I moved to Sydney and other things in life took over and my commitment became less fervent. Eventually, for a lot of reasons, I started to barrack for the Swans. Certainly, the two most important men in my life are passionate Swans supporters, and that's had an impact.

Guess what fellas... you can barrack for two teams... no one minds... really. The teams would rather a share of your passion than none at all. And every team, whether at the top or the bottom ALWAYS needs your support.

Now I'll take the keyboard from Schrodes and smack his hand... but it is his birthday, so I'll wait til tomorrow!

Miss you stupid Doylie.

Swans all the way mate.
And, I reckon Schrodes is alright with a keyboard!
